Errol Musk Praises Putin, Defends Elon’s Ukraine Involvement in BBC Interview

Errol Musk, the father of tech billionaire Elon Musk, has expressed his admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling it "foolish not to admire" him in a recent interview with BBC Russia.

Speaking candidly, Errol said he finds Putin to be a “strong leader” and someone he respects on a personal level, separate from the geopolitical controversies surrounding him. “I listen to his speeches — he says logical things. If you see him simply as a man, outside of international politics, it’s hard not to respect Mr. Putin,” he said.

He also raised doubts about the widely accepted narrative of Russia being the clear aggressor in Ukraine’s full-scale invasion, stating that “only in time will it be possible to understand who really started” the war — despite overwhelming evidence that Russia launched the invasion in 2022.

Errol Musk, a former South African engineer and politician, is known for his complicated and often tense relationship with his children. Elon’s brother, Kimbal Musk, has previously described their father as verbally abusive, claiming he would berate them for hours, calling them “worthless” and “pathetic.”

When asked about Elon Musk’s opinion of Putin, Errol claimed their views are aligned. “We all think so. We’re all the same,” he said, referring to his family’s stance.

Errol also touched on Elon Musk’s role in the Ukraine conflict, particularly his decision to provide Starlink satellite internet to the Ukrainian government early in the war. He praised the move, calling it the right decision at the time. However, he noted that the war has dragged on longer than expected and seems endless now.

Addressing speculation that Elon’s political engagements may be motivated by business interests, Errol dismissed the idea outright. “God heavens, we have everything. We don’t need money or one more successful business,” he said, emphasizing that the Musk family is financially secure and not driven by profit in their decisions.

Elon Musk is the CEO of SpaceX, a company that holds multi-billion dollar contracts with NASA, the Pentagon, and other U.S. government agencies. SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network, which includes nearly 7,000 satellites, is crucial for global internet access and also plays a significant role in U.S. military communications — including on the front lines in Ukraine.

Musk has also claimed to possess a U.S. security clearance, giving him access to classified information — a rare status for a private sector CEO.
