In a major military operation in mid-February 2025, Ukrainian Air Force jets carried out a powerful airstrike on a Russian military facility in the Kursk region. Following the attack, video footage showcasing key elements of the strike was made publicly available. On February 14th, the Ukrainian General Staff shared the video on its Facebook page, offering important details about the airstrike’s success and its impact.
The strike occurred on February 13th and targeted a Russian military stronghold near the village of Elizavetovka in Kursk. This base was being used by soldiers from Russia’s 28th Infantry Battalion, part of the 60th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade, in their ongoing war efforts against Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the Russian troops stationed at the base had been launching drone strikes on targets in the Sumy region.
The General Staff described the strike as part of a broader strategy by Ukraine’s Armed Forces to neutralize threats and diminish Russia’s military capabilities. The 26-second video clip, while not containing many details, shows the Russian base before it was struck by a bomb from a Ukrainian jet, followed by the explosion caused by the attack. Analysis by the Ukrainian military news outlet Militarnyi suggested that the bomb used was a 1000-pound Mark 83 (460 kg), based on the explosion seen in the footage.
The Mark 83, an older bomb, had been modified with an American JDAM-ER guidance kit to transform it into a precision-guided weapon. Notably, Ukraine became the first country to deploy a JDAM-ER-equipped Mark 83 bomb in February 2025, after footage of the bomb being used was shared online. The bomb was dropped by a Ukrainian Su-27 Flanker fighter jet on a Russian position, with the video being initially published by Ukraine’s 39th Tactical Aviation Brigade on Facebook.
